Formé en 1984 par Jon Schaffer, (Guitare/Chant), Iced Earth, groupe de power metal Américain a véritablement pris son envol en 1991 avec un opus éponyme de très bonne facture.
10 albums plus tard, le quatuor est de retour et nous présente son petit dernier, en l'occurence "Plagues of Babylon", qui, il faut bien l'admettre, est loin d'être transcendant.
Les inconditionnels de Hard-Rock vont forcément y trouver leur compte, si toutefois ils ne sont pas trop exigeants. La voix de Stu Block est vraiment essentielle, les guitares de Jon et de Troy Seele sont plutôt efficaces mais malgré quelques titres qui sortent du lot comme "Among the living dead", "Peacemaker", et "The culling", ce nouveau disque manque cruellement d'originalité. Le problème est certainement lié aux composition approximatives ainsi qu'au trop plein de ballades qui saoulent un peu au bout d'un moment.
"Plagues of Babylon" n'est pas un mauvais disque, mais sincèrement, il ne marquera pas non plus l'histoire.
